mini-Schenkerian analysis

Shenker argued that all Western works are made up of the same basic melodic building blocks (passing tone, upper neighbor, lower neighbor). This kind of analysis really just involves zooming out and getting a bird’s eye view of the large-scale melodic movements of the piece. (N.B. I guess Schenker was recently cancelled, but that doesn’t decrease the efficacy of this kind of analysis.)
